Dr. R.H. Gordon (1887-1973) retired in 1950 from the University of Alberta Dept. of English. He had first joined the University staff in 1913, having graduated from Toronto and Oxford Universities. 1936 saw his appointment to Head of the Dept. of English and from 1943-1945 he acted as dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science.
